CaptureGemCaptureGem vs Moniturbate: Comparing Automatic Cam Recorders
Moniturbate and CaptureGem solve the same problem: keep an eye on the cam rooms you follow and record them when they go live. Both save the best quality a stream offers, both record several shows at once on their paid plans, and both include an editor. The differences are in which computers they run on, which sites they cover and how much the free versions can do.
We make CaptureGem, so weigh this comparison accordingly. Every Moniturbate detail below comes from what its own website lists.
The short answer
- Moniturbate is a straightforward choice if you use Windows, every model you follow is on a site it lists, and you mainly want to monitor and record.
- CaptureGem is the better fit for most people: it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, has more than twice as many built-in sites including VR, and its free version can record several models at once.
At a glance
- Platforms: Moniturbate's desktop software is for Windows; it also offers a separate free Chrome extension. CaptureGem runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Built-in sites: Moniturbate lists 10 platforms. CaptureGem supports 24, plus 130+ more through Streamlink.
- VR: Moniturbate doesn't mention VR. CaptureGem records StripchatVR, Dreamcam and SexLikeReal.
- Free version: Moniturbate records one show at a time. CaptureGem lets you add up to 10 models and record several at once, up to 5 minutes per recording. Neither auto-records for free.
- Paid plan: Moniturbate Premium is listed at $29 per month. CaptureGem's plans are on our upgrade page.
- File formats: Moniturbate saves .ts and MP4 files. CaptureGem saves MP4 by default, or MKV.
- After recording: both have an editor for trimming. CaptureGem adds a tagged, filterable review library and video combining.
What Moniturbate does well
Moniturbate keeps things simple. You build a monitoring list, see who is online with live thumbnails, and record at the highest quality the stream provides; its site advertises up to 4K and 60 FPS when a stream offers them. The free version lets you monitor an unlimited list of models, though the list isn't saved between sessions, and the built-in editor can cut, trim and extract clips as compressed MP4 files.
Premium adds unlimited simultaneous recordings (limited by your bandwidth), auto-record, automatic encoding to MP4 and a saved monitoring list. If you use Windows and every model you follow is on one of its 10 platforms, Moniturbate is a credible tool.
Where CaptureGem goes further
It runs on your computer, whatever it is
Moniturbate's desktop recorder is Windows software. CaptureGem has desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, and on Linux its recorder can even run headless for advanced setups. If you use a Mac, or might switch one day, that settles it.
More sites, including VR
Moniturbate lists Chaturbate, Stripchat, Cam4, CamSoda, Flirt4Free, BongaCams, Streamate, LiveFreeFun, MyFreeCams and Jerkmate. CaptureGem has nine of those built in (LiveFreeFun isn't one) and adds XHamsterLive, LiveJasmin, ManyVids, Cams.com, XLoveCam, XCams, CameraPrive, AmateurTV and more, plus 130+ other platforms through Streamlink.
It also records VR. StripchatVR, Dreamcam and SexLikeReal shows are saved as side-by-side 120° fisheye MP4 files for headset players such as HereSphere; our StripchatVR guide shows how.
Choose any of the 24 built-in sites from a single list when you add a model.
A free version that records more than one show
Moniturbate's free plan records one show at a time. CaptureGem's free version lets you add up to 10 models and record several of them at the same time, up to 5 minutes per recording, as long as each model is live when you add them or press start. It's a limited trial, but it shows you how CaptureGem handles your sites before you spend anything.
Several rooms recording side by side, each with its own status, duration and auto-record mode (placeholder usernames).
Auto-record with more control
Both apps start recording when a model goes online on their paid plans. CaptureGem Premium also restarts after disconnects or network timeouts and offers several modes: Consecutive, Monitor Always, Record Always, and Record or Monitor with an expiry. You can apply auto-record to every model you add, and long shows are split into 60-minute segments by default.
Each model can have its own auto-record mode, from always recording to monitoring until an expiry.
One performer, several sites
Many performers stream on more than one platform. CaptureGem Premium's cross-site model groups link those rooms, so CaptureGem can record from another site when the model goes offline or private on one. Moniturbate doesn't advertise cross-site grouping.
A model group ties one performer's rooms together across sites (placeholder username).
A library, not just a list of files
Moniturbate's editor is handy for clips. CaptureGem adds a Review tab that generates an image grid for every recording, with filters by model and tag, sorting, favorites, review status and deletion protection. Select several recordings to edit their tags, combine them into one video, export them or delete them in one go.
Proxy mode
CaptureGem Premium's Proxy mode routes your browser's traffic through CaptureGem, so you can record a private show you're watching, streams from sites without built-in support, and saved recordings from cam sites. Moniturbate doesn't list an equivalent. The Windows proxy guide explains how it works.
Price
Moniturbate Premium is listed at $29 per month on its website. CaptureGem Premium's current plans are on our upgrade page, and Premium includes complimentary CamTrove Premium. Whichever you consider, measure it against the sites you actually use: a plan only pays off if it records the rooms you follow.
Which should you choose?
Moniturbate makes sense if:
- you're on Windows and plan to stay there
- every model you follow is on its 10 listed platforms
- you want a simple monitoring list and the occasional clip
CaptureGem makes sense if:
- you use macOS or Linux, or want the freedom to
- you follow models on LiveJasmin, XHamsterLive, ManyVids, VR sites or other platforms Moniturbate doesn't list
- you want to try recording several models at once before paying
- you want cross-site groups, Proxy mode and a library to review what you've recorded
Our verdict
Moniturbate is a capable monitor-and-record tool for Windows users with a short list of sites. CaptureGem does the same job on every major desktop platform, across more sites including VR, and keeps going after the recording ends with a review library, an editor and video combining. For most people who record cam shows, that makes CaptureGem the better choice. Download CaptureGem for free and test it on the rooms you follow; our Chaturbate guide is a good place to start.
Only record streams you have the right to save, and respect performers, site terms and local law.
