CaptureGem 2.14.14: smooth Stripchat playback in QuickTime, Chaturbate recordings that start with sound, and LiveJasmin and Proxy fixes
CaptureGem 2.14.14 fixes Stripchat recordings that jittered in QuickTime, makes Chaturbate recordings start with sound, gets more Stripchat Proxy, SexLikeReal and Dreamcam recordings converting, keeps MyFreeCams and Proxy tab Chaturbate recordings in time, shows Streamate private shows as Private, stops offline LiveJasmin models from restarting and playing music, makes Combine Videos safer, and checks Windows updates before installing them.
Stripchat recordings play smoothly in QuickTime again
In 2.14.13, CaptureGem started recording the broadcaster's original stream on Stripchat even when Stripchat's own quality list left it out. On some of those shows, the original stream's frames carry no information about the order they should be shown in. VLC and IINA work the order out themselves, but QuickTime Player and other Apple players showed the frames out of order, so the video jittered all the way through.
CaptureGem now records only the qualities Stripchat lists. When the list includes the original stream, it is still recorded, and recordings keep 2.14.13's choice of H.264 over the lower-bitrate AV1 version. On shows that leave the original out (about 1 in 10), No max records Stripchat's best listed version instead, usually 1080p, and portrait shows broadcast at a preset size record at 608x1080 again, as in 2.14.12. Videos already recorded with 2.14.13 play correctly in VLC and IINA.
What's New
- Chaturbate recordings start with sound. Chaturbate sends audio and video separately, and the audio usually starts a little after the video. Recordings began with up to about 2 seconds of silent video, which also left a short silence at each join when you combined several recordings. CaptureGem now starts both together, at the first keyframe after the audio begins, so the recording opens with sound and stays in sync. The first second or two of video, which had no sound, is left out. Proxy tab recordings are unchanged.
- MyFreeCams recordings keep the stream's timing. On some MyFreeCams shows, consecutive parts of the stream are 1 millisecond further apart than CaptureGem's check allowed. CaptureGem then retimed every part separately, which left small gaps at the joins and could make a recording about a minute longer than the 25 minutes actually broadcast. The check now allows that millisecond, so these recordings keep the stream's own timing. The same fix applies to other sites that send this kind of stream, such as SexChatHU. Other recordings are unchanged.
- More Stripchat Proxy recordings convert. When the browser abandoned a download partway, for example around a quality switch, the Proxy tab could leave an empty part in the middle of a recording, and conversion then failed with exit 6 ("empty fragment") on every retry. CaptureGem now leaves out the empty part and the frames that depend on it, up to the next keyframe, and converts the rest. That is up to about 2 seconds that were never captured. This also works when several downloads in a row were abandoned, or the last one before a quality switch, as happens when the player keeps switching between qualities. If it can't be done safely, the recording's files are kept as before. After you update, CaptureGem tries recordings that failed in an earlier version once more, so recordings that failed this way convert while their files are still kept.
- Proxy tab Chaturbate recordings stay in sync after a break. When the browser stopped fetching a Chaturbate stream for more than 10 seconds and then picked up again at the live point, for example after a network drop, the sound after the break played early by the length of the break, so it no longer matched the picture. CaptureGem now keeps the break in both the picture and the sound. Shorter breaks were already kept in sync. This applies to recordings made with 2.14.14.
- SexLikeReal and Dreamcam recordings with damage near the end convert. Each part of these recordings is cut to the time it was actually recorded. The site sends some earlier video when a recording starts, so this leaves out the last moments of video the site sent, usually a second or two. When the broadcast had lost frames in that left-out stretch, CaptureGem still checked its repair of them and failed the whole recording with exit 6 ("final video ends before its recovery IDR"). It now checks only what is in the recording, so these recordings convert. If a part's end falls inside a repaired stretch, its video ends on the last good picture. Recordings that failed this way in an earlier version are tried once more after you update, while their files are still kept.
- Streamate private shows are recognized. When a Streamate model was in a private, exclusive or gold show, or on a break, CaptureGem showed an error ("unexpected end of JSON input") instead of Private, and offline models showed the same error. These models now show as Private or Offline. When a recording's show turns private partway, the recording ends as Private instead of with an error, and the part recorded before it is kept and converted as usual.
- LiveJasmin offline and private models are recognized again. LiveJasmin changed the wording on its pages, so CaptureGem stopped recognizing offline and private models. They showed an error and restarted about every 75 seconds, and each restart reopened a hidden LiveJasmin page that, for an offline model, plays a teaser video with sound. Some users heard this as music coming from CaptureGem. Offline and private models are now recognized from the model's player within about 12 seconds and checked again on the normal schedule. The hidden page is also muted and can't open pop-up windows, so it stays silent, while recordings still capture the model's audio. If that page crashes while a recording is starting, CaptureGem now notices right away instead of waiting up to 45 seconds before trying again.
- No false "shorter than expected" warning for LiveJasmin. When a LiveJasmin recording stopped at the guest limit, or because the stream stalled, CaptureGem waits 30 seconds to be sure no more video is coming. That wait was counted as part of the recording, so its audit warned that the video was 20 to 30 seconds shorter than expected, although nothing was missing. The expected length now ends at the last video received. A real gap in the middle of a recording still shows a warning.
- Review shows the right size and length. For Chaturbate and Proxy tab recordings, CaptureGem saves the video first and adds the audio a few seconds later. If Review's regular scan ran in between, the recording could show the size and length of the version without audio, and an incomplete audit, for up to an hour. Review now waits until the conversion has finished.
- Less memory when a large recording finishes. After each recording, CaptureGem builds the thumbnail grid you see in Review. It assembled the grid from 20 full-size screenshots, which briefly took about 300 MB of memory for a 1080p recording, about 1 GB for 4K and up to 1.6 GB for VR. Each screenshot is now shrunk as it is read, so the grid takes a fraction of that, under 300 MB even for VR in our tests. The grids look the same, and smaller recordings are unchanged.
- Combine Videos protects your originals. If CaptureGem couldn't read a video's length, as happens with some damaged files, it counted it as zero seconds. A combined video missing that input could then pass the final check, and with Delete originals on, the original was deleted. Combine Videos now refuses such a video before joining anything, names the file and says its length is unknown.
- Combine Videos keeps every result. A combined video is named after the time it was made, to the second. When two combines finished within the same second, the second one was saved under the same name and replaced the first. Each combine now gets its own name.
- Quitting during Combine Videos no longer leaves work behind. When Combine Videos had to re-encode videos and you quit CaptureGem partway, the re-encode kept running in the background on Mac and Linux, and on every system the re-encoded parts stayed in CaptureGem's data folder, taking up disk space until removed by hand. The re-encode now stops when you quit. The next time CaptureGem starts, it removes these leftovers, including ones from earlier versions.
- Safer updates on Windows. The in-app updater could start unpacking an update before the download had been completely written to disk, and saved a failed download, such as an error page, as the update. It now waits for the whole file, stops on a failed or incomplete download, and checks the file against the release's published checksum before installing it. This applies to updates installed from 2.14.14 on.
- Safer logs for support. When premium users send logs while a recording is converting, the conversion's latest output is included. If that output was long, its first line could be cut partway and keep part of a sensitive value whose label was cut off. CaptureGem now leaves out that partial line. Stripchat recordings also no longer repeat a "Resolution monitoring" warning in the log on every playlist check.
